Short answer: Costa Rica requires one insurance you cannot decline — the mandatory liability policy (SLI, sometimes called TPL or seguro obligatorio) — and it's the charge that's almost always missing from the advertised rental price. A second coverage, the collision/loss damage waiver (CDW/LDW), is often optional if your credit card already covers it. Knowing which is which is the whole game.
We're a Costa Rica vehicle-verification service, not a rental agency — so we have no coverage to upsell you. Here's the honest breakdown.
The two coverages
1. SLI / TPL — mandatory, non-negotiable
This is third-party liability required by Costa Rican law on every rental. You cannot waive it, and no credit card replaces it. It's the line item that turns a cheap advertised rate into a much bigger counter total, because agencies routinely leave it off the online price. Budget roughly $15–30/day (confirm the current amount — it varies by vehicle and company).
2. CDW / LDW — often optional
This covers damage to the rental car itself. It's frequently optional — many premium travel credit cards cover CDW in Costa Rica. The catch:
- Some cards exclude Costa Rica specifically. Confirm with your card issuer, not the rental agent.
- If you rely on card coverage, the agency may place a hold/deposit on your card instead.
The counter script to know
Agents are trained to present optional coverage as if it were required. Protect yourself:
- Ask: "Which of these am I legally required to buy, and which is optional?" The mandatory SLI is the only one you can't refuse.
- Get the all-in daily rate including SLI in writing before you arrive.
- If you decline CDW on card coverage, have your card's policy in hand and expect a deposit hold.
- Photograph the car at pickup and return — damage disputes are the other way costs creep in.
If you're staying long enough to buy
Months of rental (with mandatory insurance every day) adds up fast. If you're relocating, buying and later reselling often costs less — Costa Rica's used cars hold value. The only risk is buying a car that isn't clean:
- Run the free plate check — confirm the car is real and registered.
- Pull the $25 Title Card for the verdict — liens, marchamo, inspection, fines, and fiscal value.
